The most famous application is the hypocrisy induction technique, developed by social psychologist Elliot Aronson. The method works by first getting people to publicly advocate a behaviour they privately know they don't practise — say, water conservation or safe sex. Then reminding them of their own past failure to follow through. This manufactured dissonance — 'I just told others to do X, but I don't do X myself' — creates strong motivation to actually adopt the behaviour in question. Studies using this technique have shown meaningful real-world behaviour change, including increased condom use among college students and reduced water consumption in public facilities.

On an individual level, you can engineer productive dissonance by making public commitments. Telling others about a goal before you've achieved it creates a gap between your stated identity ('I'm someone who runs') and your current behaviour.
