The trolley problem is one of the most famous thought experiments in philosophy — and also one of the most misunderstood. First formulated by philosopher Philippa Foot in 1967 and later developed by Judith Jarvis Thomson, it asks a deceptively simple question: if a runaway trolley is about to kill five people, and you can divert it to kill one, should you? Most people say yes. But pull a lever versus push a large man off a bridge to achieve the same outcome, and suddenly the moral calculus shifts — even though the arithmetic is identical. That gap between our two intuitions is not a glitch. It is a window into the deep structure of human morality, and philosophers, neuroscientists, and AI engineers are still arguing about what it means.
What exactly is the trolley problem?
The trolley problem is a moral thought experiment designed to isolate and stress-test our ethical intuitions. In its classic form, you are standing beside a railway track. A runaway trolley is hurtling toward five people who are tied to the track and cannot escape. You are next to a lever. If you pull it, the trolley diverts onto a side track — where one person is tied. Do you pull the lever and actively cause one death to prevent five?
Philippa Foot, the British philosopher who introduced a version of this dilemma in her 1967 paper on the doctrine of double effect, was not primarily interested in trolleys. She was exploring whether there is a morally significant difference between doing harm and allowing harm to occur. The footbridge variant triggers a visceral 'do not do this to a person' response that the lever does not, even when the cold logic is identical.
Greene's interpretation, which he developed into what he calls the 'dual-process' theory of moral judgment, argues that we have two competing moral systems running in parallel. One is fast, emotional, and evolved for close-up social situations — it screams that pushing someone to their death is wrong. The other is slower, more deliberative, and calculative — it notes that five lives outweigh one. The lever scenario mostly engages the second system; the footbridge scenario fires the first one hard enough to override the arithmetic.
This does not mean one system is correct and the other is not. Five lives saved at the cost of one is a net gain of four lives; therefore you should act, in both the lever and the footbridge case, without hesitation. Philippa Foot's own framework invoked the doctrine of double effect, a principle with roots in medieval Catholic philosophy associated with Thomas Aquinas. This doctrine distinguishes between harm that is an intended means to a good end and harm that is a foreseen but unintended side effect. In the lever case, the one death is a side effect of the diversion — tragic but not the mechanism of rescue. In the footbridge case, the person's death is the mechanism: you need him to stop the trolley. This distinction, the doctrine holds, makes the footbridge case morally worse.
Critically, the trolley problem exposes that most people are neither pure consequentialists nor pure deontologists in practice. We hold multiple moral frameworks simultaneously, and different framings activate different ones. That is a finding with implications far beyond philosophy classrooms.
The common misconception: it's just a hypothetical game
The most persistent criticism of the trolley problem is that it is too artificial to tell us anything useful. Real moral decisions involve uncertainty, relationships, incomplete information, and the possibility of alternatives. A runaway trolley with a conveniently placed lever is not a situation anyone will ever face.
This criticism misunderstands what thought experiments are for. The trolley problem is not a simulation of reality — it is a tool for isolating variables. More importantly, the principles the trolley problem tests are not artificial at all. They surface constantly in real-world decisions. Medical triage forces doctors to allocate scarce resources in ways that will predictably cost some lives to save others. Military commanders accept civilian casualties as 'collateral damage' to destroy a target. Engineers and regulators set speed limits, drug approval thresholds, and safety standards knowing that each choice will statistically cause some deaths while preventing others.
The most consequential modern application is autonomous vehicle ethics. When a self-driving car's algorithm must choose between swerving into a pedestrian or braking into a wall and killing its passenger, it is executing a version of the trolley problem at machine speed. The MIT Media Lab's Moral Machine project, which collected tens of millions of moral decisions from people in over 230 countries, found striking cross-cultural variation in how people want these trade-offs resolved — variation that maps closely onto the philosophical divisions the trolley problem originally exposed.
Dismissing the trolley problem as a philosopher's game is itself a philosophical move — one that conveniently avoids confronting the fact that consequentialist trade-offs are embedded in policy, technology, and medicine every single day.
What the trolley problem means for how you think about ethics

When a principle produces a verdict your intuition rejects, you have two options: revise the principle or interrogate the intuition. The trolley problem makes that process unavoidable.
